Album Review: There Is No Enemy – Built To Spill

Built To Spill has been around for quit some time now. They even have influenced such bands as Death Cab and Modest Mouse. However recent releases have not had that “spark” that earlier albums had. It’s like making yourself a bland sandwich or going to Jimmy John’s and having one there. It just isn’t the same.

Luckily for Built To Spill and fans, There Is No Enemy is that Jimmy Johns sandwich. Doug Martsch, the lead singer was able convey several underlying themes throughout each song making the album very cohesive. With such lines like ” finally decided/and by decide I mean accept” in Nowhere Lullaby and “Stay out of my nightmares, stay out of my dreams/ You’re not even welcome in my memories” in Things fall apart. Musically speaking there certainly are those jam songs, like in Good Ol’ Boredom there are several minutes of guitar solos that are whinny and bending (one of my favorites). The transition from Oh Yeah to Pat is well done; It’s not that they roll right together, but rather that Pat does not have an introduction and works well as a part two of Oh Yeah.

So head out to your local Record store and pick up There Is No Enemy (preferably on vinyl) and stop by a Jimmy John’s on your way back. This way you can have your music and eat it too.
